There he announced that we signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement with the Afghanistan government, and reiterated his plan to gradually draw-down our forces, ending the war in 2014.<p>We're always glad to hear the President talk about ending the war, instead of expanding it — as Mitt Romney and the right wing Republicans would have it.<p>But the end of 2014 is not soon enough. At a time when we are forced to make tough sacrifices at home — we simply cannot afford to spend more blood and treasure in Afghanistan. It's time to end America's longest war now.<p>Will you sign our petition calling on Congress to bring our troops home to safety and end the war now?<p>Recently Obama came under fire from Republicans who called his withdrawal timeline an "arbitrary deadline." But it certainly isn't arbitrary to the thousands of families waiting for their sons and daughters to come home, out of harm's way.<p>And a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll shows a majority of Americans agree, with 60 percent of Americans who favor bringing our troops home sooner, rather than later.<p>Setting a specific timeline shows bold leadership on Obama's part and is a strong contrast to that of Mitt Romney who said he would not set a withdrawal timeline for Afghanistan — instead calling for an open ended combat commitment in Afghanistan, a never ending war.<p>But every day we stay there, more money and more lives are lost. Why wait till 2014? We need to end the war in Afghanistan NOW.<p>Last night the President said, "this time of war began in Afghanistan, and this is where it will end." Beautiful map turtles are already endangered, and unregulated international trade is rapidly destroying them and other native turtles. <p>Protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species would put limits on international trade and monitor their populations.<p> In response to a petition filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced that it may propose 17 species of U.S. freshwater turtles for CITES protection at the next meeting in Thailand. This year's skyrocketing fur prices and trophy hunting are also taking a devastating toll. Polar bear sport-hunting and the trophy trade are prohibited in the United States, but the international trade in polar bear parts is alive and well. <p>The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now deciding whether it will move to protect polar bears under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. At the last round of CITES negotiations, the Service led the charge to ban all commercial trade in polar bear parts -- a move Canada blocked. The agency is now "undecided" on its position for the upcoming CITES meeting.<p>Canada still kills around 500 bears annually and leads the world in exporting rugs and hunting trophies. After ten years and billions of taxpayers' dollars, we have little to show for the Pentagon’s most expensive program in history except money down the drain. It’s time to end the F-35 now.<p>The F-35 came with the promise of affordability, but current estimates place the lifetime operational cost at $1.5 trillion, more than three times the initial estimate of $420 billion. That’s $18,439.33 per taxpayer! And don’t expect that number to go anywhere but up.<p>Even Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and former Defense Secretary Robert Gates have soured on the plane, with Gates calling the F-35 an “unnecessary and extravagant expense.”<p>Cutting the F-35 is a no-brainer and could save up to $600 billion over the next decade without undermining our national security. But Republicans in Congress are fighting tooth-and-nail to prevent any cuts to the military budget whatsoever.<p>Will you sign our petition urging Congress and the President to end the F-35 program now?<p>We know that public pressure works.
